Seasonal Tradition: Sumida River Fireworks

Mom visited me and she brought her homemade cooking.

We had a late lunch together and opened a bottle of Moët.

 Ummmmm, it was nice.
After lunch, we took a nap. hahaha

We woke up at 7 pm; it was already dark.  Ahhhh

On every 4th Saturday of July, about 20,000 fireworks go up on Sumida River.

I went to Sumida River to watch it few times.

I enjoyed watching it from the bottom of fireworks and listened to the sound.

Today, we watched it on TV.  hahaha

We call out old fireworks’ business name when fireworks go up.

Tamayaaaaaa

This is seasonal, too.

Onigiri (Japanese Traditional Rice Ball)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The other day, I introduced an innovative Danish product.

Today, I would like to introduce a Japanese innovative packaging.

Onigirri, a rice ball, is Japanese traditional food.

It fs very handy to eat at anytime, as a breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner and even late night snack.

First, pull down a strap.

Second, pull a wrap sideways.

Third, pull another side of wrap sideways.

Seaweed is sandwiched by layers of plastic wraps; therefore seaweed is nice and crispy till you open it.

And I won’t dirty my hand!!

It comes in many flavors: salmon, tarako (fish roe), tuna mayonnaise, sour plum, etc.

You can find it at any convenience stores.

Please try it one day!

Ocean Day

Today is Japanese national holiday, Ocean Day.

It is rather a new holiday which was created in 1996.

It used to be on every 20 July when the beach is opened, but now this holiday is celebrated conveniently on third Monday in July since 2003, after the Japanese government implemented the Happy Monday System to creat a longer weekend.

The Happy Monday System was implemented to stimulate consumers’ spending.

Today, Japanese don’t spend much (USD 11.5 trillion of household financial asset remain tucked away) due to anxiety toward pension and healthcare system.

For example, my parents generation, the retirement age was 60, but they could start receiving full pension at the age of 65.

There were 5 years of no-income period.

In my case, the retirement age will surely raise to 65, but do I want to work this long…?

Okay, go back to the Happy Monday System.

The Japanese government created few longer weekend by moving few National Holidays on Monday.

Furthermore, this year, the Japanese government created a new holiday, Mountain Day on 11 August 2016 by reflecting the severe summer in Japan that can reach 42c in summer due to global warming.

(Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to me because I have a different office calendar.)

This system targets to stimulate Japanese economy by spending not only at major cities, but also at regional areas by encouraging people to travel and shop.

Unfortunately, I’m working today.

It’s very quiet; I can work productively with help of many cups of Café Au Lait.

I can easily make a cup by adding hot water.

Sigh.

Good Luck Charm: Chimaki

Mom is a tough lady.

We just returned from our holiday last Sunday.

Mom didn’t need much time to regain energy; she went to Kyoto to see her friend on Thursday.

She was lucky.

When she visited Kyoto, it is the time for one of the most famous Japanese festival, the Gion Festival which will take place annually in July.

She could see various unique special structures, Yamaboko, in town.

Then she learned about this good luck charm, Chimaki.

This good luck charm is distributed only during the Gion Festival.

I placed it at the entrance where it should be.

Thanks Mom for caring and bringing me this special good luck charm!! xoxox

Continue Packing♪

I bought a new make up remover and refill for facial foaming soap because I prefer these.

For medicine, my boyfriend taught me this combination is good to cure when I start getting a cold: Yunker Kotei (revitalizer) and Kakkonto (herbal based cold medicine).

These are commonly sold in liquid in a bottle, but I found them in powdered form.

It’s definitely lighter and easy to carry around, especially on the plane if necessary.

74

I plan to bring a hair dryer, curlers and an electric pot to make tea.

These are all international model; I can switch voltage from 100-120v to 200 – 240v.

75

In Japan, the electric outlet/socket is Type A (two flat pins); therefore, I need to bring few plug converters to use these electric appliances in overseas.

I can transform this plug converter according to the electric outlet type.

Don’t you think this is cool?

Mango & Yuru-Chara

It was a long day because I attended a meeting from 9 am – 5 pm.

I thought I won’t have anything to share today, BUT I was lucky.

At the reception, I ate few pieces of Miyazaki Mango, Taiyo no Tamago (Egg of Sun), which costs JPY 5,000 (USD 50) per a piece.

Mmmmmm so sweet, so delicious!!!

I enjoyed watching a dance performance of Miyazaki Yuru-Chara, Miyazaki-ken (Miyazaki Dog).

Yuru-Chara serves as Local Ambassador to promote region such as local food, sightseeing places, industries, etc.

Yuru-Chara are Kawaii (Cute)!

Fiction…? No, Non-Fiction!

I couldn’t believe what’s happening at the Haneda Airport.

First, we were greeted by Pepper, a robot.

37

Then, we checked-in our luggage, but we need to do all ourselves by following instructions on the monitor!

I cannot believe this is not a movie, and happening in reality.

I could’t find a counter with a lady!

Or is it common in abroad???

I thought I am a modern person, but I guess I am not modern enough, outdated….

I departed rainy Haneda Airport in shock.

I arrived Miyazaki and checked-in to a nice room with nice view at Miyazaki Kanko Hotel.

I’ll absolutely enjoy spending most of my time in this room.

Yukata (Japanese styled pajama) is usually provided by hotels and inns in Japan.

We are allowed to walk public areas such as public hot spring bath in Yukata.

Fortunately, this hotel is equipped with a natural hot spring bath.

I enjoyed looking at the half-moon while dipping in an open-air bath♪
